The Chair of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis in Slovakia

On October 8, the Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, Boris Kollár, received the Chair of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Milli Majlis (translated as National Assembly), Sahiba Gafarova. It was the historically first visit of the Chair of the Azerbaijani Parliament to Slovakia. The visit took place at Bratislava Castle and both participants agreed on the need to deepen their interparliamentary cooperation and intensify bilateral relations between the two countries. The Chair of the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan expressed her conviction that this would improve relations between Azerbaijan and Slovakia. The Speaker of the Slovak parliament has expressed his willingness to start cooperation, which he says is not hindered, and despite the distance between the two countries, he is convinced of the need for countries to be interested in what is happening in the regions in which they are located. The meeting was also attended by Members of Parliament Peter Pellegrini (from the party Hlas-SD) and Miloš Svrček (from the party Sme rodina), who represented the Friendship Group of the National Council of the Slovak Republic with the Republic of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The participants discussed the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as current events in the international field. Boris Kollár praised the willingness of the Azerbaijani party to grant permission to fly a Slovak military aircraft through the territory of Azerbaijan in connection with the evacuation in Afghanistan. The Chair of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Sahiba Gafarovova, also met with the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Eduard Heger, in Bratislava on this day as part of the official program of her visit to Slovakia. The Slovak Prime Minister expressed interest in intensifying economic cooperation which has the potential given that Slovakia and Azerbaijan are in contact thanks to the activities of their diplomatic representatives in both countries, as well as due to membership in international organizations. Prime Minister Heger also informed Ms Gafarova about the current events in Slovakia and about the measures that the country is taking in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic. In a debate with the Slovak Prime Minister, the Chair of the Milli Mejlis mentioned, in addition to the current situation in Azerbaijan, that the country has been taking active efforts to rebuild infrastructure and renew construction in the liberated Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories that had been occupied by Armenian forces. The Slovak Prime Minister received the publication “Karabakh before and after the occupation” from the Chair Ms Gafarova.
